State University students and academics are distressed over the continued protests carried out by university non-academic staff for the13th day in a row. Activities and day-to-day functions of universities have since been halted.

University Trade Union Joint Committee Chairman Edward Malwattage told that the Committee intends to continue their protests until a fair solution is given by the authorities.

He explained that the indefinite strike was launched to demand the payment of the Monthly Compensatory Allowance (MCA) agreed by the Government in 2016 for which an assurance had been given by the former Minister of Higher Education and Highways, Lakshman Kiriella, Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education and the Chairman of the University Grants Commission.

They also demanded that the promised health insurance scheme be implemented and called for the revision of the staff enrolment procedure.

He also said that the Inter University Students' Federation (IUSF) as well as the University Executive Staff had promised to support them in this regard in the future.
