Court order ignored again Interpol red notice to be sought on Arjuna

Former Governor of the Central Bank Arjuna Mahendran, wanted in connection with Treasury bond scams perpetrated in 2015 and 2016, has again ignored Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne’s order that he appear before the Director, Criminal Investigation and make a statement.

Mahendran was first ordered to report to the CID on or before Feb. 15 following the arrest of his son-in-law Arjun Aloysius, the owner of Perpetual Treasuries Limited and Chief Executive Officer of the company Kasun Palisena.

At the time of their arrest on Feb. 4, Mahendran was overseas and so far efforts to locate him had proved futile, sources said. Responding to a query, they said the CID could now ask for a warrant for Mahendran’s arrest and then seek an Interpol Red Notice.

The CID has cited Mahendran, Aloysius and Palisena as suspects in the main magisterial inquiry.

Yesterday, the Colombo High Court judge Sampath Wijeratne upheld Fort Magistrate’s decision to deny bail to Aloysius and Palisena.

The revision bail applications, filed by Aloysius and Palisena in Colombo High Court, were rejected.

Gamini Marapone, PC with Kalinga Indatissa, PC and Navin Marapone appeared for Aloysius and Palisena.

Senior DSG Haripriya Jayasundera, SSC Lakmini Girihagama and SC Udara Karunatileke represented the AG and the CID.

Recently, co-cabinet spokesman Dr. Rajitha Senaratne assured that tangible measures would be taken to have Mahendran arrested.
